CUSTOMER ACQUISITION FRAMEWORK

How to find more customers

Most businesses ask the wrong question. It isn't “how do I run more ads”; it's how the right customer finds you, how you find the right customer, and how interest turns into a sale.

Last reviewed: September 19, 2026

Let the right customers find you.
And go find them yourself.

  2. 2Find→
  3. 3Convert
01
Is this a traffic problem, or a conversion problem?

“We need more customers” is really three different problems wearing one name: (1) nobody can find you, no visibility; (2) people find you, but the wrong people, a targeting problem; (3) the right people arrive, but don't buy, a conversion problem. Treating all three with “let's run more ads” is usually the wrong diagnosis, and it spends the budget in the wrong place. The next three sections treat each problem on its own.

02
Don't lose the customer already looking for you

People are already searching for you: on Google, on AI search systems like ChatGPT, on social media. Capturing that demand doesn't require a complex campaign, just basic findability: a complete Google Business Profile, a clear and honest website, and the technical readability that lets search and AI systems understand you correctly (crawl access, plain service descriptions, real contact details). What AI search actually needs technically is its own subject; see our AI customer acquisition page.

A quick self-check:
  • •Search your business name and city on Google: do you appear, and is the listing current?
  • •Search your exact service plus your city ("[service] [city]"): do you appear anywhere on the first page?
  • •Is your website's page title and meta description empty, generic, or the same across every page?
  • •Can an AI assistant (ChatGPT, Perplexity) actually read your site's real text, or does most content load only via JavaScript?
  • •Is your business name, phone and address consistent across your website and any existing listings?
See the AI customer acquisition page →
03
Find the right customer who isn't looking for you

Some of your best customers will never search for you, because they don't know a solution exists, or don't know where to start. Finding them is proactive work: define the audience precisely, reach them through the right channel (direct outreach, local or sector partnerships, referrals from existing customers), and frame the offer in their language. In B2B this usually means a target-account list and direct contact; for a local business it can mean cross-referrals with complementary businesses. The right channel depends on the nature of the business; see section 05.

04
Why doesn't interest turn into a sale?

Traffic or interest alone isn't enough. The most common blockers: visitors can't tell what you sell within 5-10 seconds, too many competing calls to action, missing trust signals (real reviews, references, transparent pricing), and a contact path that's harder than it needs to be (long forms, hidden pricing, slow replies). These aren't theory; they come from our own ChatGPT Search research, see section 06.

05

Which channel makes sense, and when?

There's no single right channel; it depends on the nature of the business, search volume, and how long the decision takes.

Local service business with measurable search volume

Google Business Profile + local visibility

Niche, low-volume but high-value B2B sale

Target-account list + direct outreach

Brand trust is critical, decision cycle is long

Evidence + content + AI search visibility

Traffic already exists but isn't converting

Conversion architecture (not more ads; the page/form/CTA)

06

We test this in our own work, not just in theory

The evidence below comes from real work; none of it is dressed up with assumptions.

Traducteur Turc

For a trust-critical service like sworn translation, we built pricing clarity, plain service descriptions and a single-step contact path, turning trust and findability into design decisions.

turkdizisi.com

Over a period we measured on our own product, roughly 39% of active users arrived via ChatGPT referral. This shows AI systems can already be a serious discovery channel sending real users, not customer counts or purchase intent.

→
ClassyDesign's own methodology

This page is itself a piece of evidence: we measure our own customer-intent research and ChatGPT Search citation behaviour with real data and honest limitations. See the AI Discovery Benchmark section.

07

Visibility isn't success; a customer is

We track progress across six levels. We don't celebrate level one as if it were level six.

  1. 1Visibility: you appear in AI/search discovery
  2. 2Visit: AI/search sends a visitor
  3. 3Qualified lead: the visitor becomes a real inquiry
  4. 4Meeting: the lead becomes a conversation
  5. 5Proposal: the meeting becomes a proposal
  6. 6Customer: the proposal becomes closed business
08

How we actually build this priority order

The ordering in sections 05-06 isn't arbitrary; every territory is scored against the same six criteria. This is the real method we used in our Phase 1-3 customer-intent research, applied here too.

Google demand
How many people actually search this question, measured with real search data.
Commercial proximity
How close the person asking is to a purchase decision (idle curiosity vs. vendor search).
ClassyDesign fit
Whether we genuinely have relevant experience/evidence to add here.
Competitive gap
Whether existing answers (Google/AI) are actually weak, or already well covered.
Conversion potential
How close this intent sits to an actual buying decision.

AI demand (“how often is this asked in ChatGPT”) can't be reliably measured today, so it's excluded from the score, kept explicitly null. We don't display data that doesn't exist.
